Introduction to
FPGA Design:

Architecture, Programming, and Tools

Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are among the most versatile and powerful components available in hardware design. These devices can be programmed to execute complex hardware configurations, effectively allowing them to emulate specialized chips. As a leader in FPGA  development, Orthogone has gained extensive experience and valuable insights into FPGA design, which we’re excited to share with you.

What is FPGA Design?

FPGA Design refers to designing a digital circuit configuration for an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) chip. Unlike Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) that are hardwired to perform a set of functions, FPGAs can be reprogrammed even after manufacturing, making them highly versatile. An additional advantage of using FPGAs is the reduced time to market, as it typically takes less time to develop and release a product. Furthermore, the development cost for FPGAs is often much lower than ASICs, making them ideal for small-volume productions and prototyping.

Understanding FPGA Architecture

The architecture of an FPGA is a sea of programmable logic blocks, interconnects, and memory elements like registers and RAM. These logic blocks can be configured to execute simple tasks like AND, OR, and NOT gates or more complex functions like decoders or mathematical operations. In addition to programmable logic, modern FPGAs include ‘hard’ (unmodifiable) logic blocks dedicated to specific tasks, such as PCIe interfaces. The interconnects can be programmed to create data flow between these logic and memory blocks, enabling intricate digital circuits.

Logic Blocks and Interconnects

Logic Blocks are the building units that perform the computational and logical operations. Interconnects are the pathways that facilitate data transfer between these blocks. By programming the logic blocks and interconnects, engineers can turn the FPGA into any digital circuit that fits within the available resources on the chip.

FPGA Programming: How it Works

Programming an FPGA involves specifying how its internal components should be configured to execute the desired functions. This is often done using Hardware Description Languages (HDL), like VHDL or Verilog. The configuration is then compiled into a ‘bitstream’ that can be loaded onto the FPGA, setting its logic blocks and interconnects to create your custom digital circuit.

For instance, Orthogone’s ULL FPGA framework is designed to maximize the potential of FPGA programming, particularly for applications requiring ultra-low latency.

Tools for FPGA Design

There are multiple software tools available that facilitate FPGA design. These range from high-level synthesis tools that generate HDL code from C/C++ programs to specialized software suites from FPGA vendors, like Intel’s Quartus Prime or AMD’s Vivado. These tools offer simulation, synthesis, and debugging features that help designers throughout the FPGA design process.

The Role of FPGA Design in Modern Engineering

FPGA Design has broad applications across various industries, including healthcare, finance, automotive, and aerospace. Its flexibility, speed, and ability to be reprogrammed post-production make it a powerful tool for developing high-performance systems and products.

In conclusion, FPGA Design is a versatile and essential skill for any hardware or software engineer. With its flexible architecture and powerful programming capabilities, FPGA development offers limitless possibilities for creating custom digital circuits, enabling innovation in multiple sectors. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or a newcomer, mastering FPGA design tools and techniques can open new doors to cutting-edge solutions.
